Travel Tips Part 1: Car Activities

Updated: Mar 21, 2019

“Car travel is so much fun with kids!!!,” said no one ever!!!😂. It can be a down right nightmare but keeping the kids occupied doesn’t have to be totally grueling or expensive. Don’t get me wrong, a good library of dvds and books to take are always a good idea, but you need more than that for a long trip!! Here is a list of activities that have been winners for us on trips:

Dollar Store Finds

1.Make-a-face sticker books

2.Look and find books

3.Bag of characters (like farm animals, people or even unicorns)

4. Cars

5. Chalk and black paper

6. Mini card games

7. Scissors with fun edges and scrap paper (if they’re old enough to use scissors unsupervised)

8. Letter and number magnets

Amazon Finds

1. Wikki sticks

2. Rainbow scratch paper (this is the black paper that comes with a wooden stylus to scratch off the black to get to the rainbow colors underneath)

3. Color magic books (the marker reveals the colors as you color)

4. Magnetic story activities

5. Reusable sticker scenes

6. Felt board scenes

7. Paper dolls

8.Scavenger Hunt Card Game (our favorite car game!!!!)

Homemade Activities

1. Felt road for cars, road signs and houses (buy a bag of cars from the dollar store to use on the road)

2. Felt anything! You could do a barn yard or just an outdoor scene of green and blue. So many ideas with this one and even the worst crafty person can make this!😄

3. Cut colored pencils in half for easier travel (I always use colored pencils and chalk because they don’t stain or melt😉) *Bonus: if you have two kids, this gives you two sets!!🙌🏻

*Wendy’s and Chick-fi-A have great activities in kid‘s meals. We save them for when we travel.🙌🏻😊 This is a bag of those connectors from Wendy’s meals.

This is a travel tray made from just a pillow and a cookie sheet from the Dollar Store! Attach with industrial strength velcro and it makes a great activity tray for nearly $0!!!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

What Not To Bring

1. Very small items like legos or Littlest Pet Shop. If they fall into the seat, they are gone😬.

2. Crayons or markers. No one needs to clean that up.

3. Anything that requires your help. It’s supposed to make your life EASIER!

I am sure I have forgotten some things. We have used so many ideas and activities over the years, but this is a start! Happy traveling!!!
