You read the title correctly. I said “one minute”!! That’s all it takes to jump start your day!! And, no one can say they don’t have one minute😉. Of course if you have longer in the morning, by all means go for it!!! I want to make this realistic though for the busy mom.
1. Start by trying to get up a few minutes before the kids, so you can maximize that one minute. Don’t worry. If that is not possible because of a number of reasons, you can still do it. If I don’t have a chance to get up before the baby does, I do it when I let the dogs out in the morning. My husband holds the baby while I let them out and I do my session on the porch. I fit it in any way I can.
2. Try to do your routine outside. It’s not essential, but there is something about being in that fresh air that helps get you going and helps you to soak up that positive energy. I could do a whole blog post on the benefits of being outside!
3. Start with a simple sun salutation. This sequence is less than a minute and does not require you to be a yoga pro or very flexible. It’s great for beginners and experts alike. If you would like to see a variation of it, hop over to my Instagram page. It’s saved in my highlights under “Zen”.
You can also do some simple stretches that are your favorite. The point of this is to energize your body and mind; not to learn yoga. So don’t stress about the details!
4. To make this a meditation session as well and maximize your time, focus on your breathing. Inhale slowly. Exhale slowly. Imagine yourself inhaling positive energy and exhaling negative energy. One of my favorite things to do is to look up at the sky and realize the vastness of it. I‘m reminded how small we are in such a big world.
5. Pay attention to the sounds of the day around you (birds chirping, dogs barking, people getting in their cars to go to work, traffic humming by). They don’t have to be nature sounds. Listening to the day wake up will help energize you no matter what sounds you hear.
6. If you want to use this time for meditation and are having a hard time focusing, simply think of three things that bring joy to your day. It can be as simple as being thankful for the sun on your face. Focusing on the positive start of your day keeps the negative thoughts at bay. It may even help you to gain some perspective. I find that sometimes I am griping about things that don’t REALLY matter instead of remembering how blessed I am.
What not to do:
1. Have your phone or any electronic devices near you. They will be there later. PUT IT DOWN!!
2. Make excuses not to give yourself 1 minute. There is never a perfect time in life to start anything new, so just do it.
3. Let negative thoughts creep in during this time. Everyone is struggling with something in life. You have to take this time to think positive thoughts.
These are are all just guidelines and things I have found that work for me. Everyone is different, and there is no wrong way to do it. Find the yoga poses and meditation techniques that work for you!! The important thing here is to start your day in a positive way!
Namaste💕
